In 2012, Ecotourism Australia approached a number of Green Travel Leaders (tourism operators who had held Ecotourism Certification for more than 10 years) carrying Advanced Ecotourism Certification to outline their conservation activities.

Both Ecotourism and Advanced Ecotourism certified operators are required to contribute to conservation at both a local and national level.
