Work on the development of an Experience Development Action Plan for the Australia’s Timeless North National Landscape has now commenced. Australia’s Timeless North takes in key attractions including Kakadu, Nitmiluk, Mary River and Garig Gunak Barlu National Parks, West Arnhem Land and the towns of Katherine and Jabiru.
The Australia’s Timeless North Steering Committee will be overseeing this project and has successfully attracted funding from the Commonwealth Government (through their TQUAL Strategic Tourism Investment Grant) and Tourism NT to fund consultants to undertake this work. Middle Star a business member of Ecotourism Australia have been selected as one the consultants on the project.
The development of the Experience Development Action Plan for this Landscape is a key outcome of the Kakadu / Nitmiluk Tourism Industry Forum held late last year, providing a mechanism to rigorously assess the ideas raised by participants in that forum and identify projects (both commercial opportunities and access and visitor infrastructure priorities) that will significantly enhance the competitive advantages of Australia’s Timeless North in the global Experience Seeker market.
The Action Plan will also build on the significant planning work currently underway in this region, including:
- preparation of the next Tourism Strategic Plan, Towards 2020
- drafting of the sixth Kakadu National Park Plan of Management (including the technical audit of the current Plan);
- development of the new Nitmiluk National Park Joint Plan of Management; and
- other recent plans that have been developed for specific areas in the region, such as Gunbalanya.
The Action Plan will identify a small number of new or significantly enhanced visitor experiences in the Landscape and outline how investment in these experiences could be sought. The Action Plans are due for completion by April 2013.
